Manipulation and ethics

a. The story of the website is about manipulation and ethics that are in the journalism community. The website explains how digitally changing you pictures to another product is not ethical. The page gives example of journalist that have done this and the consequences are the loss of job and their credibility. The website also infers that the common ethical rule is not to lie because you are making a distrusting relationship between you and the reader.
b. This type of enhancing is unethical because the pictures are telling a lie and not the truth they are basically hiding it. Also putting things that never happened or altering with other objects in the picture is not ethical for the same reason that you are taking someone else's work or lying to your readers. By looking at the photographs this is unethical because most of the things that were edited never happened they were just selfish to give credit to someone or attract viewers. This is not ethical because through this a photographer is conveying false messages and the articles are supposed to tell you the truth. The photograph of Clinton and Fidel Castro for example it is false because like it says in the caption it never happened.

American soldier

2
  • A. The most powerful photograph in the slide show is the image of the little girl herding he sheep. The reason this image is powerful is because it shows the poverty the country is going through. Not only that but the image of the little girl makes it powerful because in our country a girl at that age would be in school.
  • B. The sequence of photographs that are more powerful are (in country) because they capture what the country look like and what the soldiers do in their time. The reason it is powerful is because they got more meaning than just the other ones where he is at home.
  • C. The images work together by displaying images of the daily life before, after and during the time he is in Iraq this help create a story because they paint a picture off what he felt like and created other perceptions.
3
  • A. The verbs in the pictures are present verbs like if it is actually happening right now.
  • B. The captions explain the photograph more vividly thus making it easier to make a story behind the pictures.
4
  • A. Ian flinches at the though of having his shot which is one of the requirement before going to Iraq.
Ian tires to keep the tower of wood blocks balanced in order to beat his partner.
Ian and his girlfriend discuss about where to put the other furniture in their new apartment.
5.
  • a.By making a video and actually having the main subject of the picture telling what is happening enhances the image because now it has a better credibility.
  • b. The videos are better than images in the way you can put music or words which create a better way for people to understand what is happening in the images. Like the first video the subjects of the photograph tell what is happening or how they felt making a better understanding of the photograph itself.
  • c. Images are better than videos in the fact that they let the viewer imagine what is happening it lets them have an open mind and appreciate more detail. The picture of him sweeping in the halls for example you look at his expression of the face see what around him and make and assumption of why he is there instead of some telling you what is happening you use your imagination.

Marlboro marin audio slideshow

Luis used lots of skills in the video. like making a slide show, adding music to the back ground, adding effect, and also implemented voice. The effects that were created were as if it were either a biography instead of a slide show. The best image in the slide show would be the one where miller is looking at the sunset and the photographer used the shattered glass to add a frame the lighting was perfect and also it showed emotion which made the picture come to life. The sequence of photographs that are the most important are the ones where he is in the war because they show raw emotions in them. That creates the projection of the emotions to the viewer of the picture. The images work together to tell a story because it is as if that moment has been frozen in a paper and shows emotions that a person can explain better. Putting several images in a sequence makes a story even better because they will tell a story with more detail.

Post shoot reflection

1. Some of the problems i had when capturing some of my pictures is that the children would get shy or wouldn't let me take the pictures.i had to take my pictures from a distance so they wouldn't know i was taking a picture of them.
2. I had a problem with zooming in and I forgot to check at the lighting on the side meaning the numbers on the right hand side. As i was taking the pictures i would mostly take them from a side point of view i wouldn't mean to its just thats how it turned out.
3. I would use the side point of view, the only reasons i attempted to the side point of view was because the students would get shy.
4.The things i would do differently are try to get closer or zoom in .

What the pros are doing - Repetition

A firefighter tries to extinguish a burning olive tree during a wildfire in the village of Dombrena, Greece.
The pattern in this picture i see is on the wood that is burning. the thing that lead me to this picture is where the sun is coming through the tree, and how you can see the guys shadow.

Villagers stranded by a recent typhoon make their way across a makeshift bamboo bridge in Hsinfa village, Taiwan. The pattern i see in this picture is the water running down the stream. the thing that lead me to this picture was the man walking across the little bridge so they can get across.

The board of a big wave surfer is engulfed by a wave as he swims under it at an offshore reef known as "Dungeons" in Cape Town, South Africa. the pattern i see in this picture is the wave just the way the water looks. the thing in this picture that caught my eye was the red surf board.

Hurricane Ike

I like this picture because the photographer didn't really focus on the hurricane itself, but he focused on the message the people had. This picture is also a good representation of the rule of thirds if it was split horizontally.

This picture really caught my eye because it was taken from a distance and it catches pretty much a whole neighborhood. You can see the rows of houses and it kind of reminds me of a pattern. The fire also catches my attention. I think that might have been the photographer's intention, to catch the fire because its basically a flame on water.

This is a really good discussion picture. Its focus is the girl in the room but the message is bigger. The way her face looks is probably a feeling all of the people had. Its also a very simplistic picture. Its not alot of commotion or more then one thing thing to focus on.

What the pros are doing - Sports

1.) Focal length of lens -EF 400mm

2.) Shutter Speed -f/2.8L IS USM,

3.) What is the effect of shooting at this shutter speed?Stopped in mid motion

4.) Aperture-shot at 1/1000 f/2.8

5.) What is the effect (Depth of field) of shooting at this aperture? That means he was that far away from the shot

6.) Position - Describe where you think the photographer was standing to get this shot. The photographer is standing above the beam and the girl so he is taking the picture from above

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

i see fish, 2 guys holding something
i smell fish
i hear water close by
i taste fish, wood
i feel tired, ready to get this over with, ready to go home

i see wood, people sitting down
i smell feet, fish, and wood
i hear people talking, and yelling
i taste the spit in my mouth
i feel like like I'm lonely

most inspiring

This picture is the most inspiring to me, because she is below the net with her hands in the air like she is waiting for the rebound. The girl be hide her looks like she is waiting to either block or help her out. it looks like the lighting in this image is on the right side. There is a lot going on the left side of the image so there is more lighting on the right less going on. These two ladies are dressed up in there uniforms. looks like there colors are red and white.

Academics Preview

The Story: I think this picture is the most interesting because the guy in the picture is so focused on what he is doing and he is on the x-ray light that makes it more interesting to look at. and the chalkboard is written on that just make you really look into the picture.

Action and Emotion: I think this picture has the most emotion and action because look and her facial expression while she is getting blood taking from her arm. her hand is on her mouth to release the pain and to try to focus on something else besides the needle going into her arm.

The most Interesting: I think that this picture is the most interesting because there is so much going on in the photo. there so focused on what there doing there is paint so they can finish there pottery.
